Shaun Marcum recently received a cortisone injection for a right shoulder impingement according to Terry Collins. Collins told reporters Wednesday that this injury is not considered serious as Marcum goes through this type of injury every spring. Collins also said he expects Marcum to go his next turn in the rotation next week. This is definitely something to keep an eye on however as any time you hear the words “Shaun Marcum shoulder injury” in the same sentence. The Mets cannot afford to lose Marcum this close before the season already down one starter.

I agree the Mets can not afford to lose Marcum this close to opening day as well. In addition, they could not afford to lose David Wright during the WBC tournanent and they couldn’t afford to lose Daniel Murphy who, as far as I know, has not played a regular ST game and they couldn’t afford to lose Frank Francisco at the start of ST who also hasn’t thrown a pitch yet and the ominous list of injured key players continues seemingly year after year. The last two years it was Ike Davis with that unfortunate ankle injury in 2011 and then valley fever to start 2012. I won’t get into Kirk Neuwenhuis because this comment response is already too long. I hope that some day, some year our New York Mets can start their season with a full squad of healthy players all anxious to win for themselves and their fans. So far, it appears that 2013 is not that year. Pardon my frustration but our “Broke Mets” situation is two fold. They are broken financially and broken with injured players playing in a division against financially stable and apparently healthy and talented competitors eager to beat them.
I feel like their injuries arent “as bad” as we think right now. Francisco was useless anyway so if he takes a few weeks into the regular season then so be it. Santana is a troubling. Im fully confident Wright will be ready for OD. The concern to me is Murphy because as you pointed out Mike, he hasnt played at all yet. The injuries are a concern but if Murph and Wright can somehow get in the lineup in 11 days i think we will be fine. Also the “BrokeMets” isnt supposed to be a knock on the Mets, I love the team and you arent gonna find a bigger fan than me. Always appreciate the feedback Mike and hopefully theyll get healthy soon.
