Sandy Alderson told reporters a few moments ago that 3B David Wright was diagnosed with a moderate intercostal strain and will cease baseball activity for the next 3-5 days. This puts Opening Day in serious jeopardy as guys who have these strains, typically miss a month. “You saw what happened to Murph. Murph has been out a month. Last year, David had it, missed a month. Jason Bay had it, missed a month” Terry Collins told reporters. Obviously this injury takes Wright out of the World Baseball Classic.

Is it a guarantee Wright misses a month and Opening Day? Definitely not but it sounds as if the Mets don’t like their chances here.

This obviously is a disaster as it seemed like Wright was finally getting the recognition he deserved on a national stage and before you knew it, he’s out and could possibly miss a month. If he misses close to a month it would put Opening Day in serious jeopardy. I would assume if Wright starts the year on the disabled list, Justin Turner would start the year at third base.

i don’t like the WBC. The MLB players in this tournament should all be with their MLB teams doing what needs to be done at a pace thar best ensures they will be MLB ready by opening day. To be competing in a tournament and going all out for national pride with and vs players that don’t have MLB cobtracts makes no sense to me. Now David Wright may not be healthy enough to start for the Mets on opening day. What a disappointment this is to all Mets fans who have had more than their fill of disappointment since game 7 of the 2006 NLCS.

While I think the WBC is great to help grow the game oversees, I believe the best time for it is late October, November after the season not a few weeks before it. These games have gotten great tv reviews and the WBC isnt going away anytime soon. While this is incredibly disspaointing, I wouldnt rule out Wright playing opening day. We all know how tough this guy is and who knows maybe Wright gets the same injury if he was playing in Mets camp. After all he only played in 4 games for America. Its a very interesting concept though Mike.
